One of 2 things could happen: Microsoft could actually be smart and learn from their competition and actually produce a desirable and stable OS based on the Linux kernel, or they could make an abomination by attempting to integrate existing Windows technology into Linux, which would be a horrible, buggy, insecure, and ultimately useless piece of software (much like their existing software). One more thing they could attempt to do is actually buy out Linus Torvalds and make Linux their own. Of course, I doubt he'd go for that.Oh, and I really like the first few posts referring to Hell freezing over. At first glance, that is the image that comes to mind.

What's in it for MS is they receive a recurring revenue stream for their patents based on each copy of SUSE Linux that is sold. It's a good way to hedge their bets. If Windows remains dominant they get paid. If Linux becomes dominant, they get paid.

How come nobody has picked up on the fact that /Microsoft have promised not to file patent suits against Novell and only Novell/ (oh, and a few programmers here and there who _don't make a profit from working on Linux, i.e. are unemployed programmers_)? They are opening the way to file lawsuits on just about every other linux distributor. Some think it unlikely that they WILL, but the fact that they MIGHT should frighten plenty people off.
