virtuelvis.com — Microsoft filters out any MSN messages containing "download.php" or "gallery.php". The messages are silently discarded without any indication being given that they have been blocked. To see a list of legitimate URLs that are now unable to be sent through MSN, put allintitle:download.php into Google. Many are Free Software downloads.

MSN also silently discards any message with '.scr' in it. I'm sure this is also meant to protect stupid people from clicking .scr links and potentially getting a virus, but a friend was trying to show me the Scrolling Buckle, whose website is www.scrollingbuckle.com. Note the '.scr' in that URL. MSN wouldn't send it, at all.

no integrity, not trustwothy. Not trustworthy? Why use? Seems the big Microsoft doesn't care about their own privacy policy, which does not indicate that they can and will do this. Next. Uninstalling after I inform my contacts.. By MSN.

Microsoft tries to prevent the spread of worms and you guys bitch and moan about it? Wow, just goes to show how f**king moronic some people really are.

It looks to me like MSN are trying to stop hackers from distributing links out from behind a php script. However blocking scripts based on an assuption that the person spreading the malware will use these names in a script is kinda dumb. The lengths thats a company will go to in order to protect used from thier own dumb mistakes sometimes makes me scratch my head. There has been some evidence of IM worms spreading much faster than the traditional email distrubuted worm. The distribution of malware over IM only gets bigger and bigger each month. People need to be warned of these things not automatically protected when the protection given is garbage.

Meh, i use skype anyway. Voice chat = very useful, and even the text chatting works better on it. And free skypout is amazingly useful (Plus, caller ID doesnt pick it up, so it is most excellent for prank calls).

Well of course it's going to filter THAT link out... it's self-preservation.

MSN has been causing way too many problems for me, so I stopped using it a few days ago, which resulted in dumping all of my MSN contacts, but I just don't care anymore. This thing is just pure s**t. Of course I refused to install the official client because of the s**tty interface and the stupid ad sponsor image that's advertising products I couldn't even buy, if I wanted to (I'm a non-US resident). As for the word filter, it annoyed the hell out of me that I couldn't send certain URLs, and best of all, not being notified. Also, I got 1,000,000 timeouts which annoyed me even more.So now I switched to Google Talk / Jabber (using it with Miranda IM). So far (in my experience anyway), that's the only protocol that actually works. It's also open standard which means you can use it with any kind of Jabber compatible software you want. You're not locked onto one client (oh, did I mention how much I hate the Messenger GUI?), Jabber is client freedom and I like that. This is nice and all, but even I realise that poking my (former) MSN contacts to switch to Jabber is pointless because I *know* they'll reply with "Everybody's using MSN, why don't you? Who cares about Jabber?". But screw it, I won't ever go back to using this micros**t product.

At the very least you can use meebo now. Old post, I know, that's for any n00bs reading this. There's also aMSN which works beautifully and gaim is now pidgin. Trillian is still buggy so I'd stay away for now. Of course, the best answer would be to use another IM service if at all possible. I've got several friends who use MSN exclusively so I don't have much of a choice in the matter.
