engadget.com — Only took 'em a couple of years, but Microsoft is finally taking a bit more of a proactive approach to its perennial "ring of death" problems of overheating 360s. Yeah, that means instead just doing the towel trick to get your 360 up and running again, you can send your Xbox off to Microsoft, and they'll actually improve the cooling internals

I'm on my 2nd one, the first only lasted 5 months before it refused to read any discs (console worked ok otherwise). I had a warranty at EB/GameStop and they replaced the whole thing for me on the spot, even the controller/headset. I swallowed my pride and ponied up $50 again for the extended warranty. at least the customer service was great.

I just replaced the s**tty thermal compound they use (that had melted entirely off) with some arctic silver and my 360 is good to go. With stock cooling and no X-clamp. That was after a freebie fix and another $130 fix.

I'm gonna check out those forums. It was my understanding that the warranty was extended to a year and no further and that I was screwed, but I'll look more into it.

I just got mine back from the repair center... I hope they beefed it up. The so-called "towel" trick didn't work, so maybe mine had more wrong with it that just overheating... oh, and it took 29 days to get it fixed from start to finish.

How about you STFU. Maybe if you were smart and did some research before you bought your console and looked for placed that you could by an extended warrenty on it like EBgames/Gamestop. You wouldn't sound so stupid right now. Everything has it issues. I have 6 months on my system no problems yet. I play everyday for a couple hours and do a lot of online tourneys. Never had an issue. Sorry to those of you that have had issues.

Mine was made in may 2006, had been fine up till the last week then bam. RROD (0102 code) I can get it to work but before long it locks up again then RROD on the next restart until cool.I noticed that the longer I leave it the worse it gets, when I was playing gears constantly for hours/weeks it was fine. Once I left it for a few weeks and didn't use it it started acting up (graphical corruption on dashboard). A few more weeks of not using it and I get RROD even while not playing a game (just turning on).Still trying to decide whether to chance it with MS (getting a crappy refurb back ) or fixing it with X-Clamp myself.

There is no issues with the fact that the 360 was made with crappy parts for most of it. The x compressors do there jobs perfectly for the most part. What tends to happen is the 360 was designed for the average person and the average home temp. (22C) With that said in the summer if your home goes above these temps it puts you 360 in a dangerous situation. With the added heat from the summers and the over heat up cool down process the cheap solder that Microsoft uses tends to fracture. This is why the towel wrap works to fix it. If the 360 is in the vertical position the heat from the parts causes hard drive failure. In a perfect environment the 360 should be levitated in air.The chip-set addition (Falcon) as many of herd of is 65nm base(cooler) while they are doing this they are fixing motherboard heat issues( AKA capacitors ). This is one of the main reasons for the 360 failures. They tend to not like the graphics chip's heat. The way to solve some of these issues is to purchase a base stand cooler and flip the fans so the stand removes air in the process. Remember to suspend the power brick as well b/c it cools like hot poop in the middle of summer. The base cooler will cause the hot capacitors at the bottom of the motherboard to cool more effectively, thus cooling the motherboard and not having to void the warranty with a inter cooler(very bad cooler, fans on fans just isn't right) or water cooling.
