computerworld.com — Just hours after a noted research analyst criticized Microsoft's plans to limit sales of Windows XP PCs, the company said it would extend the aged operating system's lifespan in the post-Windows 7 world to as late as April 2011.

I hate the way they do this every time. "We're cutting you off!" "No, seriously!" "We're not just jerking your chain here!" <pause> "Okay, have another year or two. But remember to thank us on your bony knees for being so awesome."

I love XP. It does exactly what I want it to do, and its setup just fine for me. I have no desire to migrate. And why ask for the death of XP support when that would not stop the millions who are using XP currently, and when using XP, it does not mean you have to use IE6. I am on FF3, Chrome 2, and IE8 on XP.

Exactly how much have you used Vista, just out of curiosity's sake? You're not going to have a fun time running it on a 6 year old PC with 512MB of RAM and a Pentium 4, admittedly, but for those of us with "capable hardware," the improvements were there. I don't think I could live without start search, and the Aero interface does a lot to make the OS feel like you're not in 2001 anymore...

You still want to use Firefox 2? It doesn't support any of the new web standards, which means web designers (especially those for businesses) will have to cater for your browser. It's almost as bad as using IE6, and having people pull their hair out trying to figure out how to get their website to render properly.

before you know it, it will be 2025 and Windows XP will be up to Service Pack 10.. Microsoft will never figure it out and XP will never die.

XP is fine. I will upgrade when software and hardware become very unsupported or impossible.

Are you serious? who is paying you to say that? XP is fine. I've been using it since launch and it still works wonders. There is no point to upgrading if your current stuff works just fine.

Unix is about 30 years old, XP is only about a third of that age.
