gadgets.boingboing.net — Earlier today, Microsoft confirmed that its next operating system, codenamed Windows 7, would in fact be called just that when it hits shelves at some point in the next few years. Good on 'em, I say: a simple, no-nonsense name suggests they're approaching it with a clearer eye than they had cooking up the hypefest that was Vista.

>thats just foolish, no matter how >bad it ever gets they are still filthy >f**king richnot sure which part is foolish... windows wasn't ever a technical sucess it was a master peice of legal and licencing voodoo. a large part of the reason people that made livings on support is that windows broke a lot , not understandable for normals and that was good for business. but it was inevitable that sooner or later users would realize they been had. thats whats happened. they've been trying to bring windows up to modern standards for years and they just don't seem to be able to find modern. i think part of it is that they are padded with huge numbers uber geeks that don't think like regular people. microsoft beleives in the kitchen sink method of user interface design. uber geeks want to put a button and an option anywhere they can find. but that eliminates the possibility of a consistant design. more isn't better its more likly just confusing. jobs understands this. thats his talent. no more buttons. thats why apples user interface design guidelines are so strict. thats why experience on one program generalizes to all others. thats also specifically what linux developers have caught on to. its what made ubuntu different. for most people the number of options and useablilty are inversely proportional. it has 3 main menus. for most people the number of options and useablilty are inversely proportional. ubuntu has narrowed the app options to a core group. thats why they say "it just works." other linux distros have followed their lead. the resemblence to os x has less to do with copying and more to do with design philosophy... i think.microsoft as a design culture doesn't understand any of this. windows has been one set of confusing and contradictory and non secure desgin mistakes after another... all piled up. thats why they can't use the modern CPUs develped at intel and intel wanted to make the best damn CPU and microsoft couldn't use it. thats why they should toss it to gamers and start from scratch with a small design team that is focused on useabilitiy for real people.

A distribution is not an edition. Windows editions are all made by the same company, and exist only to sell different artificially restricted feature sets to different groups of customers. Linux distributions are produced by many different companies, and cannot be compared to Windows editions.
