ft.com — Microsoft has had discussions with News Corp over a plan that would involve the media company’s being paid to “de-index” its news websites from Google, setting the scene for a search engine battle that could offer a ray of light to the newspaper industry.

This is f**king insidious. Information needs to be MORE free, not less free.

Never liked excite, ask jeeves, or any of those ilk.Yes, AV was the best for a while, but was too easily manipulated. It got to the point where you couldn't search for anything without porn sites showing up after the first few choices. And the problem with that is they weren't even decent porn sites.

Not disingenuous. I got the internet in 1997 so I remember the early search engines. Perhaps what I should have said is that its good to see someone else besides Google making some waves in the search department. I am constantly searching on Google, I never use Bing or Yahoo. But lately I have noticed more junk sites coming up on my google searches. In the past, when I wanted to find a relevant site it would pop up on the top of the list, and I would find what I needed in just a few minutes. Maybe I am simply searching for more obscure things the last year or so. But I will stand by my position that Microsoft has every right to spend its money in order to gain an edge on their competition. Lets not forget that Google took down Yahoo in the search department, they came out of nowhere and beat one of the biggest companies in the world. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can't guarantee quality and it certainly doesn't guarantee success. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, hell I got screwed by Windows ME and Vista for christ sakes, lol. Personally I think everyone is outraged over this move by Microsoft because of the NewsCorp also being listed, and we all know what evil empire they are with Fox News Channel. :D

this is an atrocity. it doesnt matter what company or search engine you prefer..do ANY of us want a day where we cannot find something on our search engine of choice simply because they have fessed up enough money?!? this will destroy search and the internet...I really hope that if this is not already illegal is becomes so.

If only they didn't have to use ill-gotten monopoly gains to do it.Imagine a world where companies don't have to compete against convicted monopolists. That's the bulls**t here.
