arstechnica.com — A Microsoft Software Engineer has posted the results of tests the company performed to the upgrade time of Windows 7. Worst case scenario is that it will take a bit over 20 hours. But a clean 32-bit install on what Microsoft calls "high-end hardware" should take only 30 minutes.

Better yet, when you do your clean install, create a new ~30 gb partition for the OS and the rest for your data. This will save you many headaches in the future.

That is a bit annoying I have a high spec PC and like the fellow above my PC seemed to freeze as the drive spun up and then stopped. After that though it worked fine and installed very quickly though.I think you'd have to have a very low spec PC for it to take a while but then again most people probably buy budget PC's with much slower processors and less RAM.

I built a computer this summer and performed a clean install of the RC. Took half an hour, max, did some final prep work and I was up and running. It was great.

I am aware of those, and they don't get the job done. Next time spend more time reading and comprehending a post before replying to it, and less time being a condescending douche to the poster.I asked, "Why can't Microsoft, with their billions of dollars, come up with a means to easily migrate from one Windows PC to another, **APPS** and data included?"From the Windows Easy Transfer page you linked: "The program does not support transferring entire applications themselves"USMT is just the command line-only version of FAST, but more configurable and aimed at corporate IT (i.e. the apps are expected to already be present on the target machine). Hence, it does not transfer applications, either.Where's the consumer-level utility for the person who wants to buy a new PC, but not blow a day or more moving over all their data, manually reinstalling all their applications and generally setting the new box up like the old one?

WRONG - I installed Ubuntu on plenty of old machines in less than 30 minutes each.
