yeah if you aren't dumb and don't turn off uac this doesn't happen nearly as easily. IE is very secure with protected mode.

"In this particular case, it was not a web page but an internal Windows "Messenger" Service which was used to pop up a Windows native dialog window.So yes, in this case it WAS a direct exploit of a Windows XP "feature".

Actually, only last night I was on a counter strike source server and one guy started yelling "pop ups! pop ups!".I asked him what he meant, and he replied that all of these Window pop ups were coming up all over his screen (stealing focus from his current gaming session).I never did find out what Windows version he was running since he then disconnected.
