bink.nu — In the Get Genuine program from Microsoft, they released a Windows Product Key Update Tool. So after getting a legal license they can choose to keep their pirated windows installation and change the key to a genuine one. So they won't have to reinstall their PC.

It won't make a difference... people still pirate WinRAR and it's nowhere near Windows-price.

It's MY hardware and Microsoft has no business disabling it without evidence of wrongdoing. This WGA "piracy check" is tantamount to blackmail and extracting vigs from likely innocent computer users.

you could change the key through magical jellybean key finder or through vbscript for a while now

@TSArtTo prove that the software is actually licensed when it is sold. Apple makes both the hardware and the software, but Windows can be installed on non Microsoft hardware so it is not a simple as a embossed serial number. But you can stick the sticker anywhere not that visible if you find it that ugly. It could be on the inside of the case door, on the bottom, under the monitor stand, wherever you like. My DVD player has a serial number on the back about the same size as the sticker on my PC.

It seems that MS really didn't think it WGA through. It should have been obvious to anyone with more than a moment of foresight that:* False Positives will sometimes occur* Those using pirated copies may themselves be victims of piracy who paid for legitimate versions but received a pirate copy unknowningly. This is a positive move, or rather it was a ridiculous move to not only hold the users to ransom when the piracy was discovered, but to not provide them with any simple method to change the code when they do purchase a license (often for the second time). That is just adding salt to the wound.

Holding this Windows XP Pro make-it-legal "Kit" in my hands right now. It's a DVD box with absolutely typical windows install CD, but untypically labelled that it's a "Kit", not a plain windows distro CD. As well, the box has sicky label with product code and license text.Once again - the CD in this kit is a plain windows setup CD. Hahah.
