networkworld.com — A former Microsoft Research employee says that Windows 7 won't stop Linux from market domination. But he goes further. He thinks Microsoft and its customers would be better off if the company ditched Windows and instead built its own version of the Linux operating system.

I speak only from MY experience. It sucks. It's interesting. I have a Pogoplug that I understand uses linux and works very well but as far as any dependable success with it as an OS on any of MY desktops at the house or at work....it's a pain in the ass. Even the pogoplug will need a re-boot occasionally and usually when I'm trying to access it when away from home. I don't hate linux and I don't read the negativity about linux as compared to the viseral hatred and envy for BGates and clan among the linux byteheads here and everywhere else. I've been running Win7 since the latest beta and now am running the RC...It works dang'd well...Your anecdotal references are impressive but....I suspect they're largely embellished to "prove" your point.

*** You can't just sit on a piece of software and think you can continue to charge people for it without any sort of new development, you have to continue to innovate because someone else is going to come along and make something better than you eventually. ***So far it has worked wonderfully well in the proprietary COTS market. Minor feature enhancements, a cosmetic lick of paint and patching against bitrot have been reasons enough for releasing shiny "new" major releases. Ship 95% old code topped up with 5% new code and charge your customers 100% for the pleasure of getting the same product, but this time working without the old bugs. Not all proprietary companies are like that, but many follow that model.

*** This is not the fault of Microsoft, its the fault of people who lack the knowledge and common sense required to operate a computer competently. ***Cop out. MS application of the security systems present in NT is shoddy. In principle NT is capable of complete System/User separation, but MS just mixed the two modes together to "make things easy".The effect? Users have to dance like a ballerina on a tight rope to keep their systems running. I'm not saying that attack and malware doesn't exist on other platforms, but due to the strict seperation of system and user, these systems are a tad more resilient against attacks.Don't shift the responsibility of MS to design robust systems in the shoes of the users.

This would be a great idea...but only if the distro is called MicroSux.
