mashable.com — Two weeks ago, Mozilla announced a major milestone for its Firefox (Firefox) web browser: one billion downloads. They even launched OneBillionPlusYou.com to mark the occasion and demonstrate just how large one billion really is.

I wish they would measure how many simultaneous users worldwide 24/7 or something but then again I don't want them always knowing when I'm online or not.

There is some truth to this. As an app developer, I would notice my registry bloating so bad that the machine would noticeably slow down. I was reinstalling XP every 6-9 months or so just to keep having a usable system. That was XP, but the fact that Windows STILL has a registry is completely ludicrous to me.

For $1 a day you can feed a hungry IE user and provide clean, usable browsers for them to use.

This counts very download from every version.. In the last 4 years i have downloaded Firefox over 25 times. 125,000,000 users X 8 downloads each = 1 billion http://tiny.cc/9RGvXMozilla COO John Lilly has revealed statistical data that provides insight into Firefox adoption levels and growth rate. Based on statistics collected internally by Mozilla from the Firefox application update service, Lilly estimates that Firefox is used by over 125 million people around the world. This is where Mozilla's math starts to get fuzzy. To arrive at the 125 million user estimate, Lilly multiplies the ADU by 3. "This is a conservative multiplier (we think it could be more like 3.5) that we've gotten to by doing some of our own experiments, piecing together data we've received from sites who have done their own calculations, and then really testing them against the best common sense top-down tests we can," says Lilly. One of the tests Lilly describes for evaluating the accuracy of the multiplier is to divide the estimate by the total number of Internet users in the world and see how that compares to standard market share statistics. Lilly points out that when you divide 125 million by 1.2 billion (the total number of Internet users as estimated by Internet World Stats) you get roughly 10.5 percent, which is actually lower than the global market share attributed to Firefox by most third-party studies. With that in mind, it seems safe to assume that there are at least 125 million Firefox users.

@wbkang I think I can hear your hard disk churning in the background. Has Norton finished scanning it yet?

In Microsoft's defense that 1 Billion is a bit questionable, especially when most early versions required a manual download to upgrade and more recently users were encouraged to download just to up the counter.Far more meaningful are the browser share stats where no matter who is counting Firefox is still gaining.

I can only speak for myself, I have never seen ie crash, 7 or 8. Use it for about 3 hours a night, and off and on for 8 hours a day at work.iE8 a joke? I have not had a single problem with it. You say you have been using Firefox for years, so we know where your sentiments are. You talk about layers and layers of crap, thats what you get with Firefox and all the plugins, not ie. It all comes down to the user, I would bet that most if not all the crash's you have on your customers computers, are from people trying to do more than their computer can handle, too many windows/processes running, being impatient and overclicking. Don't tell me otherwise, I know, I work on others computers also. I see all the crap they try and do. Most computer problems are user caused. No need to preach to me about Firefox, I have used it off and on over the years. It works fine, but does nothing for me that ie doesn't already do.
