telegraph.co.uk — Microsoft is developing a new touch screen operating system that could mean the end of the computer mouse, Bill Gates has announced. Windows 7 aims to build on the success of the touch screen systems developed by Microsoft's rival Apple's iPhone.

The "30 inch IPhone is the future of computers" fallacy strikes again. Three things you require from your physical computer interaction are speed, accuracy and ergonomy. Touch interfaces have none of those while mouse handles first two perfectly and ergonomy in the sense that you have to move very little while using it. If the 30" iPhone future actually happens, will we see hackers with well coordinated ambidextrous arms, oiling their huge touch screens to reduce friction?

I love how Bill always likes to "look at the industry" and whenever he has something to say, even when he's not the one who pioneered the technology he's even talking about, everybody listens like he's the freakin' Jesus of the computer industry. If you want the real future look at what they're doing over at Apple. (I'd love to add another example beside Apple so I don't look like an Apple fanboy but I can't really think of one at the moment, although I'm sure there are others)

stealthhc, agreed. dugg.imagine a FPS using the touchsreen screen as a mouse... haha xD

nah, they have have funky-looking keyboard interfaces. theres always still a conventional screen in front of the character. ^^

the point is its not people being lazy.you try holding your arms up and moving them around for 2+ minutes at your screen. its just impossible to use it for hours on end.

Yes. I agree that the way we interact with the system will change dramatically. But, 'm not positive about this thought of "end of the computer mouse." Maybe because it could produce dissatisfaction to our work condition like difficulty to lift our arm every time and its practicality since a mouse-less computer would depend on the purpose and its use to some organization. Thinking about the future, maybe Mr. gates is right on this since we're not really sure of what needs to happen with regards to technology in the future. If Mr Gates has a vision, he will know what to change.
