arstechnica.com — Talk about wasted tax dollars. Michigan becomes the first state to require online coursework for its students, billing it as a way to bring students into the 21st century. What if the students are already there? Do students really need help learning to use online tools?

i think its amazing this is not required in other schools (and really didn't know until now)the statement about the internet being the 21'st century equivalent of the library couldn't be any betterwhat they really need to teach them is where to find the "right" information online, which a sizable portion of college students cant even seem to do

I'm pretty sure all students would have access to computer resources at school.

I think this is a great idea. Online classes are likely to occupy a large portion of classes in the future. This is a great opportunity to get future students ready for it.

You would be surprised how many high school students are online ignorant. I work at a community college in Michigan as a computer tech, and I can't believe how many students straight out of high school don't understand how to get online or how to use a very simple system like Blackboard, or even to download or send e-mail attachments or turn off a pop-up blocker. As the "techie" community, I think it is hard for us to see this because we use it every day and it seems oh-so-simple, but for others it isn't so. I think this is probably a good idea in the long run.

this course is for everyone in the system. if theres is a student that doesn't know how to learn online, they system will find him and teach it to him.

I think teaching people about computers and how to use then is a good idea but this can't be the best way to go about it.I do have to say that teaching about using computers at school is necessary to get those people who aren't the least bit interested in computers to at least become familiar with the basics and also how to do something productive with them and not just playing online games all the time.
