The same people against "Single Payer" or the Public Option -- which is the REFORM we actually want from the Dems, the same people who want unemployment and social security to go away, or Progressive taxes that USED to redistribute some wealth, and tariffs that made it more expensive to import and thus preserved jobs -- those are the same people who wake up SURPRISED that there is this bothersome homeless population they have to deal with.In their minds, they rationalize things, that these people are homeless because they are less good, didn't go to church, didn't do the right thing. Some people, aren't like you and me, and don't have good parents, or grew up scared and with crazy parents.Nobody WANTS to be Fat, or addicted, or homeless or poor. There have always been people at the top and the bottom, so we don't need to "encourage incentives for productive people" as it never actually works to "discourage poverty." Functioning well -- is dang great if you are lucky enough. And I said LUCKY. You didn't just have a work ethic because you were born blessed by God -- it's genetics and environment. The Calvinists had a belief that your fortune was written by God -- so, people with messed up lives deserved their lot in life. I wonder why Haiti had so many poor, with NO socialist handouts available -- amazing everybody wasn't rich from the totally unfettered free market there and not stifling entitlements. The ONLY thing, other than Capitalism with no oversight taking advantage of them, and numerous governments interfering with Haiti trying to have a Democracy -- is that Gawd, doesn't like them. It is their FATE to fail. Otherwise, you have to admit; "Resources, education, protection from abuse and social programs help get people out of poverty." But really, down deep -- the people who are OK with Haiti being poor, don't give a damn, and they'd love to airlift the homeless and drop them somewhere. Let Pat Robertson send us some videos of kids with crying eyes and distended stomachs so we can pay $15 a month and know that "nothing ever gets solved, but I'm a charitable person." Charities don't cut it and never have.America, had NO HOMELESS PROBLEM until Ronald Reagan (with a little help from Carter emptying out the abusive mental hospitals but not adding an alternative).Just the Bonuses going to Wall Street right now could pay for health care for everyone who doesn't have it. We heap icing on so many cakes while people starve --- I'm all for people earning more though effort -- but not at the expense of how we treat the least among us.But we have money for $700 Billion going to the "war effort" in this country. I wonder what creative excuse they will come up with for the next time they fail and we have to chase a goat herder in a country that 90% of the people didn't know it's location until CNN put it on a computer graphic on TV just before we bomb it.ONE fricken' tank in Iraq, could solve the Homeless problem in Miami -- just ONE. Does anyone still think there is no connection to "not enough money?"
How is the system rigged against "these people"? it sounds like some people (your example of sister's boyfriend) is getting to live on the equivalent of a $3500/mth income without working. Seems like an awesome deal (for him).I'm not even sure who you are claiming is "miserable"; the people how "have to" work, or the people who are "forced" to live on the street?
Somebody needs to go there with a huge load of good tasting food all presented nicely and temptingly, wave it in front of them with cameras, and say I can't give you this because I don't have my license and it is illegal. That might cause a stir.
I am trying to stop doing it when I get very expressive when I discuss these kinds of issues. I do it while talking too I would emphasize those words etc.. and I translated that to my typing. Its a very very hard habit to kill.Even if typing this I had to go back and uncaps a few words :-) hehe
