Yeah, someone else would've eventually did it, but here's a 15 year old kid who did it. And the hype around him was mainly because he could be used for this publicity (being a kid and having done NOTHING illegal... at least, the courts eventually said this). The rights in what you own when you buy something digital - DVD, song, movie, etc - were brought to the forefront, which is the best reason behind his popularity.
