torrentfreak.com — TorrentFreak?s recent articles about Media Defender have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, surely proving beyond any doubt that they must be an incredibly popular company doing great things for the BitTorrent community. In recognition of our great work, Media Defender has re-directed its p2p.net domain to us.

One of the linked articles in that story makes no sense to me:http://torrentfreak.com/media-defender-to-spam-p2p-networks-with-16000000-tracks-from-one-artist/Why does TorrentFreak seem upset about their plan to give away music? I could see if they were mislabeling those mp3s as being from other artists or whatever, but according to the article they're not. P2P supporters usually say that p2p just encourages users to go out and buy the stuff, and that the record companies need to change their model. Well, it seems like that's what they're doing in this case. They're giving away free sample tracks with no DRM.FTFA: "However, most file-sharers want a plain MP3 track with nothing added and are unlikely to want tracks which cause advertising pop-ups or similar on their PC. As ‘vanilla’ MP3’s of tracks from the same artist will be widely available on the same P2P networks"OK, if there are popups I'd understand, but it would be pretty difficult to sneak popups in via an mp3. Most likely it's just going to have a Sprint logo in the album art or something. If p2p users are really concerned with a change of business practices, they should support that move rather than downloading the non-ad-supported rips.

That's actually a pretty good idea. That's what MiiVI was doing, right? Collecting IP's?

Convicting people of file-sharing based on IP address is like charging people for crimes based on a witness saying their brother's girlfriend's mother's dog saw a car of the same model and colour as yours at the scene of the crime.
