Well, essentially that is the only way to do a live action Mario that emulates the game. I have seen other "talent show" entries with the same type of style.
true, but there is a difference between having the people in the background color because you are doing it live, and a commercial. They could have use the game's graphics for everything and green/blue screened the kid in.

I've seen this done several times in Japanese shows; if anyone, it's the "college kid" who is ripping something off.
