blogs.discovermagazine.com — So a little while back, John McCain made an ill-advised crack about planetaria (that?s the plural of planetarium), calling them "foolishness". It was ill advised because it raised the hackles of lots of science-loving folks, including those who want to ? gasp, horror! ? educate kids about astronomy and science.

McCain shows he is really not with it. I don't get how he could have thought that targeting the funding of tool, that is essential for science education in a large city such as Chicago, would go noticed by educators and the science community. The importance of a planetarium for educating thousands of children in a large city such as Chicago went right over his head. The light pollution in a metropolitan area significantly reduces the ability to see anything but the brightest of space objects. Something a loose cannon maverick must not understand.

This goes completely over McCain's head. The planetarium exists. It is a very old and beautiful building. It is a tourist destination, and a destination for countless school tours. If the projection system doesn't work, then it isn't such a great destination.

Yet more evidence that the 'straight talk express' is now the 'double-talk express'. This guy will say or do positively -anything- in his desperate grab for power. 'I support education' --unless it includes 'overhead projectors', I guess.
