thinkprogress.org — Appearing on Ellen DeGeneres's show today, McCain said, "I just believe in the unique status of marriage between man and woman." Ellen replied, "We are all the same people. All of us. You?re no different than I am. Our love is the same."

Your argument is a failing one - You are assuming that there has not been homesexuality for thousands of years, the Ancient Greeks and Romans have myriad examples.I have a different idea, educate everyone in the world - then no one will reproduce with someone like you who is such an obvious evolutionary backwards step.

On the very same show ( about three weeks ago) Senator Hillary Clinton told Ellen how her gay neighbor was unable to marry and she thinks that's wrong. That they deserve the same treatment as anyone else.

If you marry a plant, you will be a widow/widower very soon. Better be sure you choose a plant with a long life, such as a live oak tree, etc., as it will then outlive you. However, the plant has no way to consent to the marriage. *Ability to consent* is the liberal mantra for justifying every kind of perverse sexual configuration known to man and beast, so liberals would be very much against your marrying a plant. They would consider it plant abuse. A thought: Is it possible to gain the consent of a parrot who you have taught to say "I consent?" Is that actually consent? Important question. Another thought: We could determine if it is possible to gain the consent of a dog to having sex with man. Someone could have sex with him, note how he responds, and if it is favorable, then teach him to bark once if he consents and bark twice if he does not consent. Simple.

"Allowing marriage to be between one man and one woman is not advocating any religion."But disallowing it for two men or two women *is* advocating for a specific religion, hence the issue.

Most of the Western world, with the marked exception of the United States, is predominantly secular. There are studies, which you can find yourself online, which correlate societal health and wellbeing with the degree of religiosity across all developed nations. There is a strong, indeed very strong correlation between the level of secularism and the level of societal health and wellbeing. Less religious societies have higher life expectancies, lower child and spousal abuse, less violent crime, better public health, less internal migration, more stable families and communities, etc., etc., etc. The authoritarian regimes you mention merely copied all the oppressive attributes of religion, from inerrant, unquestionable dogma, to rituals and priestly garments worn by an unelected class exclusively authorized to "interpret" the word of a "perfect" leader. That is why I said all authoritarian systems, religion in particular, in my original comment, which you clearly did not read thoughtfully before your conditioned dogmatic rant.Your response is the best testament to the dangers of religious conditioning. You are taught to fear and hate that which you do not understand and which you have been inhibited from freely exploring by your religious masters. Free your mind, set aside your prejudices, and don't be afraid to learn new things. I studied many, many religions as part of my quest to self-actualize and understand the world. My rational conclusion is that there is no evidence of supernatural beings and that all religions are bunk. You may come to a different conclusion, but I'll bet you have never truly, openly and critically explored humanistic value systems that do not rely on fear of a wrathful god for enforcement.I am a decent person not because my religion tells me so, but because I have taken personal responsibility as a human being, equal to all other human beings, to act responsibly. Do you believe that, without religion to hold you back, you would be a bad, evil, hateful person? If not, ask yourself - do you really need religion?

"Again, a president is supposed to represent ALL people and not just your views thus compromising and getting what people really want is what a good president is about."The President of the United States swears an oath of duty as specified in Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution (you should try reading it some time, it's pretty cool). That oath states:"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."Note that the oath does not say, "I will average out all citizens opinions, the bigots and the progressives, the skinheads and the pacifists, and come up with whatever splits the middle."Rather, the first duty of the President of the United States is to the Constitution. Not to the Bible, not to the flag, not to the emotions of the mob. The Constitution primarily protects the rights of the minority against the tyranny of the majority, not the other way around. (Good thing for you, too, since yours is a distinctly minority view in the United States of America in the 21st century).By the way, the words, "So help me God" are NOT contained in the Constitutionally specified Oath of Office, nor are they in the U.S. Constitution.

"What utter nonsense. If "atheism is a belief system", please list the beliefs that comprise that system. "Lets see, how about:-"As for the "good, bad and ugly" canard, which you must have picked up from a Hallmark card, there is an inherently bad (in my opinion) aspect to religion itself, regardless of flavor or how many licks it takes to get to its center."Is an opinion not a belief, sir?-"That flaw is that religion relies on acceptance of authoritarian dogma, is inherently inimical to the notion of self-determination of reasoning, independent beings, and necessarily divides the world into good (believers) and bad (disbelievers, or believers in other dogma)."No it does not, because some of us are smart enough to seperate the Fear of God, from a Fear of a man who claims to be His representative. Theocracy has been overthrown with those of the same religion who came of this understanding, that's where Protestants came from, but I feel even the Protestants have become to into the following of irrational men, so there will probably be as Protestant Protestant in the years to come. It is man who enslaves man, and sometimes they use God as a tool to do that, sadly. And does not being religious mean you are not authoritarian? This question is alot like the ones you proposed at the start. You claim I see things in black and white, then paint a picture in those colors. I stated that all groups people develop are grey, with individuals of varying shades. - If we were all truly equal (as an atheist, I have no reason to believe otherwise), and one cannot be made "better" than the other, then what is the need for religion?Religion is a philosophy, a thought, about what life is like, and what life is like after life. Some thoughts are mainstream, while others off the wall. A grasp of understanding the great mystery of death and life. It is not about trying to convert, or trying to prove being one is better then another. But here you stand, not understanding this, and trying to convert people to Atheism.I don't think you're immoral because you are an Atheist, Romans 2 states that those who are morale will be justified, even if they are outside 'the Faith'. And that those who claim to be in 'the Faith' are not justified just because they say they are and wave about a banner(Romans 2:13).It is up to God to judge, in my belief, not man. That is a lesson all these mainstream preachers have forgotten, and I reject those who would use God to enslave and claim authority of the hearts of men. By the way, my sister is an Atheist, and I have talked to her rationally. I mainly listen, and from the sounds of her anger, it sounds like she's mad at what people are doing (and did) with religion, not religion itself. I am not blind to that, but I only hope that I can make a better example then some of those who came before me.
