Well, depending on where in the country they live, he's right. $200,000 is rich in some places, but it's barely middle class in many other areas of the nation where cost of living is high.
Personally, I think you're rich when you can do just about anything you want on a whim and not have to stop and think about whether you'll have the money to finance it. $200,000/year does not meet this criterion.
