huffingtonpost.com — Sen. John McCain offered, on Tuesday, what may go down as one of the more awkward moments of this campaign cycle, in which -- speaking in Western Pennsylvania -- he declared he 'couldn't agree more' with the sentiment that some of the people from that region were openly racist.

I grew up in northwestern PA. Slightly south-east of Erie. Not everyone is racist, but there is a lot of it out there. I am happy to see during recent visits back to see family and friends that some diversity is beginning to trickle into the area. I hope they feel welcome, but I fear they may encounter a number of people who do not welcome them.

I was born and raised in Western PA. Western PA is racist and it is dishonest to say that it is not. I am not trying to be insensitive just honest. I took a drive around the Western PA countryside this past weekend(2 1/2 hours) and the McCain/Palin yard signs out numbered Obama 9-1. The media paints a picture of Obama/Biden leading in PA. The voters that I have spoken to are voting Republican regardless of their strong Democratic Pennsylvania upbringing. The talk is usally pro McCain/Palin.(from young voters to elderly) The media numbers dont add up. I will not be shocked if McCain takes PA.

The last time I was in W PA I was unable to drive through Jim Thorpe (yes, its a town) because a man was holding his mother, wife, and 3 children hostage with a sawed off shotgun in the middle of the town. And thats not even that far west. So if being a liberal jerk means I don't have to deal with crazy, bigoted rednecks, thats fine by me. And unless you are in Philly, no part of PA is really that liberal. But you probably wouldn't know that because you haven't left Pennsyltucky.
