tuaw.com — Something is missing from the latest iPhone commercial--namely the bit about "2 Year Activation Required". And today AT&T launched new pay as you go Feature Packages. Could this be leading up to the pre-paid contract-free iPhone that we all gave up on when the iPhone commercials debuted this week?

@jasonwatsonNot much use unlocking it if you can't access the SIM card.http://www.slashgear.com/more-iphone-news-no-sim-slot-045562.phpI've said it before on other posts. The iPhone has a slick interface and nice form factor, but falls dreadfully short in terms of functionality. What bothers me the most is that the iPhone is using EDGE when AT&T has already rolled out HSDPA with competitors like Samsung and HTC already offering phones that can use this protocol. WTF Apple!? Why no HSDPA? It's ridiculous to market the iPhone as a breakthrough multimedia device when it can only access the web at EDGE speeds. It's like trying to market the next iBook with a just a 56K modem. Good luck using iTunes with it.

Why would someone buy something like that when any windows mobile phone is better.

I seriously doubt the 2-year disclaimer is required to be displayed, even if a 2-year contract will be required. The fact that the disclaimer no longer appears means nothing. The disclaimer generated a lot of negative press, so I would guess the legalities of including it were examined closely and determined to be non-existent.

Wait until you see all the iPhones on the street, that should piss you off royally.

Yes, you could pay the early termination fee, but that raises a couple problems. 1st you have to wait 6 months read any contract from at&t or any other carrier and it says if you cancel in the first 180 days you need to return the phone or be charges $200 or the full cost of the phone which ever is greater. Also what will you do with the phone after that? Use it on T-Mobile? If you unlock it you will only be able to use it on at&t or T-Mobile and you have to sign a contract with T-Mobile. You could use prepay but why pay for 6 months of service, $200 early termination fee just to pay higher voice rates and use subpar data plans? I saw the new GoPhone rates and for I think $14.99 you get 5MB of data, that will be used up in 3 normal websites on a smartphone. Those plans are meant for normal phones.

Zybch: Check this out: http://www.kottke.org/07/01/the-apple-iphone .Look at the scale mockup next to an iPod; the whole thing's narrower and thinner!
