thinkprogress.org — On Monday, PBush hosted in the Oval Office the co-chairs of a U.S.-Russian commission on missing soldiers. Human rights groups were outraged that Bush agreed to host the Russian chair, Gen. Vladimir Shamanov, who has been “accused of overseeing some of the most notorious atrocities against civilians during the brutal second war in Chechnya."

The Chechen war is largely ignored in western press, but it's been infinitely more brutal than the war in Iraq. The Iraq war is a civilized teaparty compared to the war in Chechnya - ordered mass rapes, torture, random killings of civilians, even things like retaliatory artillery strikes against civilian residential areas when Russian soldiers have been killed - that's normal in the Chechen war, and it's still going on. One of the worst war criminals, a local islamist warlord, was recently appointed president of Chechnya by Putin, as a reward for his efficiency at pacifying the population by murdering them.
