markshuttleworth.com — Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu, writes. "As a team we made a series of errors, and the result was a desktop that was broken for thousands of users, for several hours. It has been a severe lesson in QA."

if anyone here actually uses ubuntu they'd know it only takes about 2 lines to type into the terminal and you are back, if you are using linux and don't know how to do this...

@therernospoonsI wouldn't classify "download the new, fixed version" as a workaround...

how about using lynx to find up the answer instead of waiting 5 minutes for the LiveCD to load? :P It's hard to even notice it since I rarely reboot my linux box, but it so happened that I was installing Compiz and XGL, and I did the update before that... restarted the X Server and bam, one crash... fixed it (had to install libglitz-glx) and then bam, another one... this time not so easy to fix :P It's all good though, better than Window's stability.

I'm toying with Ubuntu (new to Linux) and was fortunate enough not to have this issue. What was cool, though, was I installed XGL with the NVidia release drivers and screwed up X. The fix provided for the blue screen update also resolved my issue (I later got XGL working nicely; so cool!). This makes perfect sense since the fix resets the default X configuration. The important thing here (for other newbs to linux like me) is that your computer is not dead at the point X fails. Read the Ubuntu forums, the help is great. Find a command line reference and have at it. It's been an education but definitely worth it. So far I'm finding that I become more comfortable with Ubuntu with each minute. As a quick side note, if you are a web developer and need to view your pages in IE you can run IE 5, 5.5, and 6.0 via Wine in Ubuntu.

@Shaken. I agree with you.His openness was refreshing. As for microsoft, when I am on windows, every day, i get about six updates for stupid little holes in programs like notepad, or outlook express. This is the first problem I have ever had with the ubuntu updates, and thanks to Digg, I was able to stop it before it messed up my system.

@amarquesi've heard of fanboys but your boyfriend calling himself Ubuntu is almost as extreme as that guy with the debian tattoo on his head

I like the facts that1. Ubuntu is learning to admit mistakes2. Ubuntu is learning to correct mistakes3. Ubuntu is learning to do 1 and 2 real quick4. Ubuntu has good record for 1,2, and 3 above so far.
