news-journalonline.com— Since the earliest settlers, marijuana has long been a cash crop in the United States. Many people, however, don't know how it became illegal. This is a brief history of the infamous weed.

No mention of the real reason it was made illegal- back in the 1930's, DuPont chemical company had come out with a "miracle fiber" known then (and today) as "Nylon". DuPont did not want any competition for his new invention so he sought to demonize the one natural substance that threatened his sales- Hemp. The flowering tops of the hemp plant are that which we enjoy, and thus the marijuana wars were started. That would be 1/2 of why it was really banned. The other half is William Randolph Hearst who owned lots of timberland and didn't want to see the paper prices go down, so Mr. Hearst, and Dupont got to together and bought the government.
Because cotton farmers had competition from hemp farmers and they got the government on their side. And Mexican immigrants were smoking it, and you already know about the racism and xenophobia of the southern US.
I hope every day that spreading the word on Digg will help lift the oppression that these drug laws cause. I think the s**t will really hit the fan if the supplies start to fall and prices rise after the Great American wall is put up. I quit smoking a few months back and I spend more time posting on this topic then ever before. I Hope some of the other 25 million people out there will do the same.
And why is this "Offbeat News"! What the heck is offbeat about millions of Americans lives being destroyed by a sick prohibition policy? Do they post the damn Iraq death tolls in Offbeat news. How about other forms of sick oppression? VT shootings was just a muse compared to the human rights abuses of the drug war, was it "offbeat"? Is the abuse at Abu Ghraib "offbeat news"? People are being killed, abused, tortured, and singled out every day because of the sick ass war on Drugs and its "offbeat" ways. What a crock of crap Digg!
Hemp is ~NOT~ a nitrogen fixing plant. It is a nitrogen ~depleting~ plant. From HempReport.com: "Hemp has a fairly large nitrogen uptake, so it is common to grow hemp after a nitrogen-fixing crop such as alfalfa, or legumes."Otherwise, a good post.
Nope. Actually hemp products are 100% legal in the U.S. and always have been. Nice try though. This is actually a rumor that has been spread around big media and is not true. There's another rumor about a paper company that was afraid "Hemp Paper" would kill it's business. Even if Hemp wasn't legal, this is absolutely ridiculous. A mega corporation would just use hemp and use it's superior business model to kill the competition. Why would a nothing company with hemp be any scarier to a mega corp than a company using anything else. Also, as far as legalizing weed. The real heads have been protecting weed by keeping it illegal so the capitalist mega corps (read: Phillip Morris et al) don't take over along with the capitalist government heads in the big tax off. Get ready, the "free weed" era is coming to an end.Just a little northern cali knowledge, overstand me now. m1
