dailymail.co.uk — The father of one has left other motorists stunned after shelling out ?14,000 on a 1974 Sabre light reconnaissance tank. Now 42-year old Stephen uses the military vehicle instead of a car for shopping trips - zooming round at up to 40mph near his home in Winsford, Cheshire, drawing astonished looks from fellow motorists and passers-by.

Pretty damn cool. One of my old neighbors was an army dude, and he had a halftrack and would bring home big machinery from time to time. I'll never forget when he landed a huey in his backyard. One question: WTF is up with "When we saw the tank we thought it was police coming up at last with a real response in dealing with anti-social behaviour in the town." ?So in the UK they send POLICE in TANKS to deal with antisocial behavior? Let's chalk that up as one BIG difference between them and the US.

If I remember correctly, here in States anyway, interstates are made to withstand most military vehicles so that if necessary the military can use them for defense in the event of invasion.

For those thinking about getting their own tank, found this useful website.http://www.joseph1.demon.co.uk/The armoured vehicles are here:http://www.joseph1.demon.co.uk/index-armour.htmAnd it looks like they have a few main battle tanks for sale as well as other stuff.

The article states that it cost ?165 per year to TAX. It doesn't specify the insurance but I'd guess it'd be a lot more than that, although he's unlikely to be doing many miles in it.

Well I'm glad you didn't, because the Unimog doesn't go too much over 40MPH. I see one every now and then at a 4x4 event. Yeah, they're unstoppable, but not a daily driver by any means. Also, good luck finding parts.
