SuperCujo, isn't north the cooler direction when you live in the southern hemisphere? I am extrapolating from how it works in the northern hemisphere, where a nothern exposure gives you heat in summer and cold in winter. We should know, out flat is at the northeast corner of the building with open expanses that used to be tree groves - we bought it because of them - that were cut down, so we are as extremely hot in summer and cold in winter in this town, known for its beautiful weather, as it is normal in Delhi.Or was that AU$ habitual from having grown up and you actually have shifted to live in the northern hemisphere?
What a lot of noise about technology that has been used now for a while effectively for office buildings! The whole "does it heat, how much does it cost" questions as if no one here ever heard of glass walls to keep light and heating bills down. Wood stove seems cheap now but destroying forests is the wrongest possible step when carbon is a concern and forests help with that. Solar and natural ways are far better to go. That is easier with heating, and as for cooling it is a mindset of ac that needs to change - there are other ways of keeping cool that are far more efficient. Delhi and generally north India, that is north of the central mountain ranges, gets to 120 F in summer in day and if you are out in sun you could die, in fact many do every summer; but most people use other ways of keeping cool homes and bodies without AC (cannot afford) or disrobing (living in large families). The open windows at night and closed during day is part of it, a heat vent high near the ceiling is another, fans instead of ac are far cheaper, change of food to suit the needs of cooling a very fundamental one, straw curtains made of special straw that cools especially when kept wet is a special one. Re food to keep cool, try yogurt and cutting out red meat, for starters. Rice cool, beans ok, meat hot, water cool, oil or fat hot, salt cool, sugar hot, cinnamon -cloves hot, cardamom cool, lemon or lime cool, papaya hot, coconut and banana cool, cold milk cool - hot milk hot, salads cool, cheese hot, citrus cool. These are effects on body from consumption of those foods.

$2.50 to heat .... $250,000 to build

that's easy... ICF (Insulating Concrete Forms) and/or a geothermal or air-source heat pump.

It need not be impossible to open a window upstairs that could let out heat and create a breeze.
