torrentfreak.com — A man who went on a TV show downloading spree after misunderstanding the terms of his cellphone contract has been hit with a bill for $54,000. The factory worker, 29, who fears being made bankrupt said: ?I just laughed out loud. How on earth could I afford to pay that?? A loan, maybe? Santa?

I think businesses would like it more if cell phone bills were ALL like $300 to $400 instead of just a random 5 people that got charged $54,000 and got the charges removed. (Boil the lobster slowly and it won't know it's being boiled.)

While it is his fault for not reading the small print(Im always wary of using the internet on my phone...) how the f**k can the bill get to over 50K?? For 20-30 TV shows and a few albums???!!! Sounds like blatant ripping off to me

That's not entirely correct -- I work for a certain cellular carrier and handle the Western US (Cali included, of course), and for the most part Customer Care will NOT just watch an account for any type of activity like that. The Fraud department might, but that's only on flagged accounts. Your contract also clearly states that the ability to browse the internet and use your phone for data transmission, which includes using it as a modem to connect to your pc, is free UNTIL YOU USE IT... and once you use it you pay a per-kilo fee, unless you have an unlimited data plan.
