linuxplanet.com — f you've always admired the Apple OS X desktop theme and layout but aren't ready to drop a load of cash on an Apple machine (or if you want to stick with free software), this article will show you how to make GNOME look and feel more like OS X, with some limitations.

"I like your style. It reeks of low OS self esteem."My self-esteem has nothing to do with my choice of OS. I use Linux and FreeBSD on my servers, Windows when I need to, and OS X for my desktop because I work most efficiently with it. If someone wants to use Windows all the time, then good for them. Windows is different, Microsoft has made some good choices, and I'm sure it fits a lot of people better than OS X or Linux would. Likewise, if someone wants to use Linux all the time, then bully for them. I have a friend who uses nothing but evilwm -- I couldn't handle it, but I'm sure he gets a lot more done that way than he would with OS X. I also work with a guy who refuses to use anything but his heavily-modded Amiga 4000T, running AmigaOS. Wonderful for him. BeOS, IRIX, NeXTSTEP, PalmOS, whatever. If it suits you, that's great. If you want to argue about value or cost of hardware and operating systems, I think that's a fairly piddly thing to do simply because the improvement in *my* productivity from using OS X far outweighs the money I would save by throwing Ubuntu on a used PIII. I should know, having used Windows since 1993, Linux since 1998, and OS X since 2004. The problem is not that you like Windows (apparently -- feel free to stop me if you're an IRIX/BeOS/AmigaOS user), or even that you're a Windows zealot (or even the possibility that you might just think all OSes suck). The problem is that your comment wasn't interesting, wasn't amusing, and obviously (judging by you getting modded down) wasn't wanted. Getting modded down isn't really a compliment, you know? You're not forging new territory, here -- you're just a tiresome prosy.Am I a Mac user? Yes. Do I think OS X is better than Windows or Linux? Only for my desktop needs -- I think it f**king sucks as a server OS, and it's obviously not the right choice for a gamer. Do I think there are too many irrelevant, unimportant Mac stories on Digg? Absolutely. But do I really want to see every frigging article having something remotely to do with OS X trolled by some idiot who can't bring anything new (or even f**king **RELEVANT**, for chrissakes) to the table? No. Kinda like how I'd like to be able to read a given article on Windows without the requisite hordes of morons mentioning that $FEATURE is completely nullified by viruses and malware. Kinda like how I'd like to read a given article on Linux without having some idiot mention hardware support. So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to start thinking creatively. Criticize or mock or troll or whatever in a new, interesting way -- something we haven't heard before a billion times. Be imaginative. Attack OS X because the color blue killed your father! Attack Linux because penguins are the vehicle of the Anti-Christ! Or just settle for reasonable complaints, like Mach's various weaknesses or X11's esotericism. That's all I'm saying. I don't f**king care what OSes you love or hate, just use real reasons, not s**tty 13-year-old troll bulls**t. Either that or go play in traffic. It's not that you have personally offended me -- it's that you are contributing to the stupidification of the Internet. The average IQ of Digg has measureably decreased as a result of your post. Please stop. Please.

Personally I'm not all that concerned with the Mac theme, but there are aspects of the GUI that I really like a lot better than Windows or any of the default Linux WM's. The biggest part is the dock, which I believe engage takes care of. Also, the 3 column layout in OS X's Finder makes it very quick for me to navigate. I'd love to find a replacement file manager for windows that would let me work that way, or a way to set up Nautilus to work that way.Oh, and I forgot drop shadows. They make it a lot easier to see at a glance which window is on top of what.

Dapper Drake Flight 4 with compiz gives me a better osx feeling.. the smooth wobbling windows are awsome. With DeskBar you've got a fine spotlight clone. The only thing that annoys me is that apparently compiz won't be themed yet >_

It's free. Therefore its quality to cost ratio is infinitely higher than Mac OS X.

I didn't spend much time typing them up at all. My typing speed varies between 90-120 words per minute, and your posts don't require too much thinking. says that post was 587 words, so it took me about 5-6 minutes to type that response. I'm also married, so I lost the ability to get laid a long time ago 8) As for drugs, I can't find any. If I was on drugs, I sure as f**k wouldn't be on here arguing with an idiot like you; I'd be listening to Pink Floyd, watching a movie, or wandering around a botanical garden chasing elves. My presence on Digg.com is a direct result of the War on Drugs, so feel free to complain to your county/parish's elected representative.

Main reason for theming linux this way.OSX Look+XGL+Beagle (Spotlight equivelent)+Skippy (adds expose feature not already included in XGL) = Eye candy and functionality that no one can touch not microsoft not Apple, all for free. Oh yeah by the way your running bulletproof linux too.Thats why I did it.

It hardly looks like OSX. Horrible skin.
