These are very simplistic. The ones in aircraft use holographic projection (using a small second screen in front of the canopy glass) so you don't have to refocus your eyes to see it. It's faster and safer.
As I understand it, most HUDs (especially if placed in cars) don't display directly into the centre of your field of vision. The idea is that you don't have to look *as far* away from the road to check your car's vitals. If the speedometer were directly placed in the middle of your vision, yeah, that would be kinda deadly. Airplane HUDs are different because there's certain information like pitch, roll, and - in the case of fighter planes - targeting, that can and should be right in your face without providing too much distraction.

that technology isnt new for carsive seen it on high end sports cars about 7-8 years ago.....
