hactivist.com— Here's how to make "light graffiti" out of disposable digital cameras - once the camera is modded it will display images/words automatically and run for about 2 days.

Seems like the website is getting hammered. I didnt get a chance to view the video but looks like a good geeky 'arts-n-crafts' idea. Ive taken apart a disposable before and shocked the hell out of myself trying to flash my friends right in their faces.
I did this a LONG time ago without destroying a disposable camera. Here's a few tips: you can use battery voltage to vary the flash frequency. That way the unit doesn't try to flash before the capacitor reaches full charge. Make sure you use the TLC555 instead of the standard 555; they use less energy.Using thin cardstock makes it easy to build a mask, but those flashes do put off alot of heat at times. It wouldn't go well for your graffiti if it lead to an arson charge. After you cut your template out, use white glue to attach a small piece of aluminum foil with the shiney side towards the flash. This will reflect some of the heat and most of the light back into the flash. The flash doesn't do well with heat either, and might prematurely fail, so it's a good idea to glue a small chunk of metal to the flash bulb or carrier. (I built my units with a standard $2.00 flash bulb from rat shack.) Take a hint from the LED throwies; attach a small magnet to the unit, then you can quickly attach it to a light pole out of reach of people. If you do attach it to a lamp post, you can steal their electricity by using a ferrite coil and a diode; stray magnetic fields from the ballast will trickle charge the battery when its not in use. Now obviously it won't trickle charge it as fast as it discharges unless you do this last mod: build a small trigger module that will only set off the unit after hearing a sound. A small mic tuned to voice frequencies can charge a tank circuit which triggers the unit for a minute or so, making it good for about a half dozen flashes (depending on battery charge). And if you get a kick out of doing this, make sure you sanitize your flashers. I got a $30 littering charge for placing these around Mesa, and thats only after they tried to charge me with stupid s**t ranging from terrorism to vandelism. I gave up on those humorless bastards, who apparently think dondescript statues of wasps and the annual passion play by the mormon church will be a draw.
I used to be for war. I thought it was a necessary evil that countries sometimes have to engage in, in order to beat back the forces of darkness in the world. You know, like Hitler and s**t. But then, one night, I was walking down the street... I looked over at the back of a semi trailer and saw a flash... I stopped, and watched the back for a second, and saw another flash. I suddenly realized that the flash was made up of letters--it was a message. A message to me. And so I moved closer, in order to see what the message said. It took watching about fifty more flashes because it was projected onto the dirty, lumpy back of a trailer, but when I realized what it said, I was dumbstruck. It said, "No War". All of a sudden I realized that I had been a fool! No War! How f**king simple is that?!? It was brilliant in its childlike, retarded, sophomoric view. Hitler? f**k him. We have enough Jews... Who cares if he burns a few million? As long as we can stand up to him and say, "No War," why it won't matter how much of Europe he overran. The power of this message flowed through me like s**t through a goose. I immediately went out, bought a Prius, and installed a Mac Mini in the dash. Now I'm posting this while driving to give Hugo Chavez a nasty blumpkin. If only all of you could share in my utter joy!
stupid... I hate all these.. "Make some simple device and leave them laying around everywhere" things.. like those LED magnet things.. pointless.. and besides, you couldn't even read the stupid thing..
