Market share does not equal install base. Market share = # of units sold. Typical PC life is 18 months. Typical Mac life is 3 to 5 years. - his is just not true. Thanks to OS X and Apple breaking backward compatibilty your lucky to get 3 years from your Mac in a production environment. I manage an enterprise full of Mac desktops and Apple servers and it's no cake walk dealing with Apple. Apple is fine for the comsumer but as long as they ignore the enterprise they can continue to watch their market share decrease. iPods alone will not carry them for the next 10 years.

This is basic strategic management. If you can't win, then don't play the game, play a different one, or at least change the rules.

@technothraser: Assuming sufficient volume margin is EVERYTHING.Try out this scenario. You have one million dollars to invest and you've narrowed the list to two companies.Company A has revenues of 1 Billion with a profit margin of 5%. Gross profit is 50,000,000 per year.Company B has revenues of only 100 Million, with a profit margin of 15%. Gross profit is 15,000,000.Here's the tricky part...which company do you invest your 1M in?Company B of course! Despite the fact that Company A has a higher gross profit in absolute currency, they make less per dollar of capital investement! As a capital investor you want the 15% return, not the 5%.No spin, just math.

This article has had a warning up all f**king day about how the content "might be inaccurate" and "is under review." How f**king long does it take to find three seconds to verify the story's accuracy? Is someone running their own personal market share survey first? Is this the website owners' way of FUDing the facts without actually being able to call the hard statistics inaccurate?

It has been four or five days now, and the assh**es running the site are still FUDing the article with their "might be inaccurate" and "is under review" s**t. I wonder if Apple is paying them to be fanboys, or if this one's on the house.

@ zweiTell me about all those poor countries that are 'swiping up' all the crap computer they have!? Apple is a luxury brand computer. I'm pretty sure all those poor countries are not switching to Mac just because they are expensive in comparison with what they can get for their money, which it's very little and hard to gain. Remember, there is a whole other world outside the US and it's not pretty most of the times.
