news.sky.com — University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers have invented a machine that makes you sleep with the PUSH OF A BUTTON, then gives you the equivalent of eight hours of sleep in just two or three hours. The machine uses a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to induce the slow brain waves associated with the deepest phases of sleep.

I thought of that too. Earthbound is awesome.

This is obviously a hoax. Sleep ray is not invented in the year 3000.

I could use the extra time to RTFA.

This would revolutionize my life, not because it would give me more time but because the three hours i get now are not fully put to use. But come on the side effects would be crzy and there is no way of telling long term effects. Maybe people would die at like 50 because their brain has overloaded or something. Its crazy. I get the impression that my great grand kids might benefit from this in a big way. Bare it in mind im 21 and have no kids and dont plan to have great grand kids for at least 80 years. it would take a big group of people to test this out for like 50+ years to see the side effects. By which point the device will be refined to let you sleep for 10 minutes, this way people will get 8 hours sleep at break times and still have time for breakfast. Oh to not have to sleep. How sweet would that be. If your body and mind just healed its self and tiredness was a mere ten minutes a day that would be so freakin awsome. The work you could get done, the fun you could have the food you would need to eat to maintain such a lifestyle. Industry would double and education would treble.Kids would be in school 16 hours a day which would mean teachers would be paid huge amounts. Schools in england when i was taking my GCSE had 5 lessons a day at 1 hour thats 25 hours per week education. Now think of 80 hours education. per week. GCSE maths only requires something like 160 hours of learning per course. Kids would be super smart teachers would be well paid. This could be the single most important invention for all mankind right through the ages. Students would get through education faster which means less debt for the student when he leaves university with his new qualifications. The invention could be the savior of humanity it could allow us to harness the rest of our brain power which will ultimatly as tv has shown us give us super powers. Before long we will be able to communicate with our brains and potentially do all our work with telekenesis. This would result in laziness from not having to pick any thing up any more which in turn would make our muscles weak and even our bones less resistant to presure and weight. After a while the next stage of evolution would happen which would see the human race relise it has no need for muscles and so strip the majority of them from our bodies/not grow them in the first place. This would however lead to less people wanting to spend time on the beach in the sun for fear of humiliation from the people that still have well groomed six packs and pecks. Hiding from people to discuise our freakish new bodies would coincide with lack of sun shine leaving us inadvertently pale. Over time our skin would become less resistant to the suns rays which would eventually make us fear the sun and seek out dark parts of the earth to live. This would lead to certain over population a specific area which in turn would cause mass panic and riots. Unfortunately some food industries would die out as a result of farmers fleeing to the darker parts of the earth. the mass rioting would cause the education system to collapse because teachers wouldnt want to work for free and the rioters arnt working because they are rioting. Civilzation as we would come to know it would increasingly decline from the lack of intelligence. The few rich enough to pay for full tuition would become the smart and the ones who cant afford the now inflated teacher fees would become the dumb. This kind of education seperation would lead to a class divide between the intelectually challanged and the knowledgable. This divide would turn to civil war and the uneducated would be forced underground. The intellectuals would then debate over the worlds current situation and realize the sorry state of affairs could all of been avoided had this invention never come to pass. The worlds brainiest would then embark on mission to invent a time machine which could transport something back to our current date in order to stop the craziness that would ensue. But how would a human, especially in such a weakened form - survive such a journey through time. IT WOULDN'T! Instead a mighty robot would be be created which would be intelligent enough to track down the creator of the dreaded sleep machine which has now been christened the apocalypse. In order for such a robot to not be stopped it must be made from the toughest metals and in order to not raise suspicion this device would have the appearance of the modern man. I tell you this story not as a joke or as a slight play on popular movies but as a creature who has seen this take place twice before. I am here to prevent the madness and this is my third attempt. After killing the original creator of the Apocalypse device i traveled back to my home time to find nothing had changed. The device plans had been recovered from the creators hard drive and the product still made it into society. I was sent back again this time to fully erase the hard drive and kill the creator, this was thought to have been a 100% fool proof but as they sent me back for the second time a decendant of the creators family leaped into the machine with me. He then recreated the device and put the plans on the internet for all to see. It was clear from that point on i would not be able to stop the creation coming in to being. This is my final attempt to right what was once wrong. It was realized by my creator that should the creator of this machine be killed, the idea would still live on, so this time i have come back to prevent my former self killing the human. It is my task to tell this story on digg in hope that people's perception of the device will be damaged before it becomes too late. But it would appear i have failed my task once again because i got here too late. By the time this reply is read nearly 4000 people would have already dugg this story and as each and every one of you know for 1 digg represents roughly 1 million people. Please be aware I have warned you of the great dangers that lie ahead should the device make it to the main stream.

I wounder what happens if you have sleep apnea, its a condition that means you stop breathing in your sleep and wake up to start breathing again, if you stuck in a machine maybe you would end up dying or getting brain damage from lack of oxygen.I haven't actually been tested for sleep apnea although there is a good possibility I have it (although I don't snore or do that thing where I gasp in my sleep, something like 1/5 people have it though and I'm always tired and don't sleep well. Also notice that the machine doesn't actually give you a full nights sleep, it just says its theoretically possible. As in the existents ghosts and god are theoretically possible.

I'm not sure this machine would be the solution to sleeping problems."Theoretically, it could also lead to a magnetically stimulated `power nap' which might confer the benefit of eight hours' sleep in just a few hours."So: take a "nap" with this thing one afternoon, and suddenly you're set to be up all night and asleep the next afternoon?

You can't believe an artificial machine like that. I found something that says it gives your body much better chances at it while doing the same thing naturally, on http://www.ironsleep.com

I need this. I can't imagine how amazing this would be in combination with Kavinace from http://www.kavinace.com. I would be more rested than I am already, not to mention I'd have that many more hours in the day to spend with my friends, and more importantly, drinking forties on my porch.
