Fact is, the IT guy at my work has a spanking new iPhone, but still drives a piece of s**t old saturn and lives in a s**tty apartment. I'd consider his choice a fashion statement, not a "wise" investment.
What's worse is you caring about some stupid advertisement and not either avoiding your neighbor or telling him to stop talking about Macs if it bothers you so much. Man up dude.
I imagine it a little more like this:Year 1: you buy mac, I buy PCyear 2: speed starts slowing down on both, you enjoy your mac, I upgrade my PC with a new video cardyear 3: both machines slow down more. you enjoy your mac a bit less, I upgrade my PC with a new CPU and some RAMyear 4: your machine is outrageously slow and the new Mac OS that came out doesn't run on it and legacy is not supported. Mine still runs quite smooth due to the upgrades I've added, and can still run all the old software I have.So yes, you may end up spending less between all 4 years, but my machine will always be running on par with new machines, while yours will constantly slow.
This consideration of what happens over a few years is of interest to consumers but marketing often forgets about it. I still have the last TiBook from early 2003 all I've done to it is up the memory when I found a really good deal. Now I want to upgrade and the TiBook has been so reliable and wonderful to use that I don't mind spending the bucks for the top of the line 15" ProBook. As I spoke to a few friends about the new machines I got three offers for my old laptop, what kind of resale do you get on a five year old pc?
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland awayOnly dimly aware of a certain unease in the airYou better watch outThere may be dogs aboutI've looked over Jordan and I have seenThings are not what they seem. What do you get for pretending the danger's not realMeek and obedient you follow the leaderDown well trodden corridors into the valley of steelWhat a surprise!A look of terminal shock in your eyesNow things are really what they seemNo, this is no bad dream. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not wantHe makes me down to lieThrough pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters byWith bright knives he releaseth my soulHe maketh me to hang on hooks in high placesHe converteth me to lamb cutletsFor lo,m he hath great power and great hungerWhen cometh the day we lowly onesThrough quiet reflection and great dedicationMaster the art of karateLo, we shall rise upAnd then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.Blasting and bubbling I fell on his neck with a screamWave upon wave of demented avengersMarch cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.Have you heard the newsThe dogs are dead! You better stay homeAnd do as you're toldGet out of the road if you want to grow old.-Pink Floyd
