flickr.com — New MacBooks seem to have problems with the plastic used on the casing. After a few weeks of normal use, my MacBook has yellow spots all over the palm rests. Pictures included, as well as links to others having same problem.

"150 comments later and nothing useful has been said. Oh, and I'm still looking at this nice yellow stain on my palm rest."Dude, you posted this on digg, what do you expect?

@cliffzdude: Not only that, but it has a matt finish, so the dirt/oil/stuff sit's in the little gaps.

Thanks for the suggestion Shrimp but with the Vaios you actually start peeling the physical magnesium coating so it comes off like dusty chipped paint.

Use Clorox Wipes. They seem to work well for me.

I get this on my MBP after about a week of using it. Want to know the secret to fixing it? Wipe it down with a damp wash cloth. It's not that hard. I have a glass desk and I take everything off of it about twice a month and wipe everything down, including my MBP. I don't know if it'll require more than a damp cloth for plastic, but it works fine for aluminum.

@WackyTStop and re-read our comments. We were saying how this is SO NOT a design flaw, for the exact reason you are arguing.(If I myself misread your comment as confrontational, then I apologies. That's just how I interpreted it.)

To all the people who said it is your hands you are plain wrong. The discolour effects various parts of the machine the top of the case the side by the ports not only the wrist parts. A friend of mine says Apple are aware of this and waiting to see what public response isThis is a serious issue one which Apple has not yet admitted, though a few colleagues of mine have already had there machines replaced but i am having no luck :(

The discoloring problem IS real, and Apple is fixing it.I took my macbook in to the Apple Store today and they are going to replace the disclored pieces, presumably for free. The guy there told me that they'd had a bad batch of the plastic - it didn't cure properly or something, affected serial numbers have been identified and mine was one of them.

I was having the same problem with my macbook. I took a Staedtler mars plastic eraser to it and it took care of it. Crazy I know, but it works.

I wasn't going to add a comment, considering the odd chances that the artsy-fartsy Mac folks own a handgun or associated products... Any who, I sprayed some CLP on a cloth towel, rubbed the oily palmrest spot on my 6 month old Vaio and voila! the stain is gone. The smell from the CLP? Just wipe the area with some mild soap.P.S.: Didn't work on my 3 year old Dell laptop.
