engadget.com — We sort of understood it with iPods, and we grudgingly accepted it with the iPhone, but the MacBook Air has a sealed, non-user-replaceable battery, and that means we're suddenly a lot less in love. We're digging for details on how much it'll cost to swap out -- and what Apple expects road warriors to do when their slick new ultraportable dies...

I tend to agree with you--although this really isn't in competition w/ an EeePC. It's really a MacBook or MacBookPro competitor. EeePc is a cheap low-power pocketable computer. The Air is a mobile (more fully functional) computer.

when you travel a lot, keeping the weight down is important. i guess it's a minority of users who like to have a spate battery and want a notebook under 3lbs. for them, an apple might not fit the bill. there are plenty of other manufacturers who make what they require. the beauty of choice.

Trust me... the guys who want any useful data you might have aren't sitting at a repair bench. They'd prefer to snatch you unit from a park bench. Unless you don't live near an Apple outlet, this will probably be a 30 minute or less offering in the store (just had a top case replaced in 18 mins. flat)... I expect batteries to be the same deal.

They'll sell due to their fashion appeal. If Apple didn't have their image, these wouldn't sell in a month of Sundays at this price.

Hah. Yea actually I have, the most recent being this MacBook Pro. Most of the screws are Phillips but there were a couple of Torx as well.IMO, yes anyone can do it. There are detailed instructions available with pictures and anything. All you need is a clean workspace, the right tools, and to be careful/gentle with the hardware.

No clue, but that's what has happened on the last 3 laptops I have had. I do a lot of process intensive things on my machines so they all stay pretty warm. I always going on and off battery power too. A couple meetings a day where you have to give demos, etc.. Not sure if the constant charging/recharging adds to the problem, the heat, or what...
