nytimes.com— "MTV, the cable TV channel some critics have accused of straying too far from its musical roots, is to acquire Harmonix Music Systems, a maker of music-oriented video games, for $175 million in cash."

why is mtv sucking now? they've been sucking for...umm...about the past 15 years. this guitar hero venture is yet another one of their attempts to cash in on the latest big thing (which they try to do quite often). you would think mtv would be broke after buying the rights and liscences to everything under the sun but noooooo. they're like the worlds largest roach...it won't die....EVER!
Inventing a new genre...? They're really just capitalizing on Konami's in ability to market it's Bemani line (other than DDR) here in the states. Sure the game may be a blast and have new ideas, but Harmonix did not invent a new genre.
I don't know who owns the publishing rights for guitar hero, although I suspect red octane has them locked up for a little while judging by what activision paid for them.In any case Red Octane is just a publisher, Harmonix actually built the game.Harmonix also develops the Karakoe Revolution games which are published by Konami. Perhaps MTV was more interested in this product line or just music games in general and doesn't care who publishes the games.

Yeah, but will this mean that Harmonix will stop making music games, much like MTV stopped showing music videos?

Why do they "$175 million in cash", like the MTV execs are bringing in $175 million in 11 huge brief.. no longcases filled with cash..

If MTV ruins it at least we have the PC clone Frets on Fire. Check it out herehttp://www.gamecaption.com/2006/09/22/guitar-hero-on-the-pc/

I love Harmonix. They made my favorite game (Amplitude). I was hoping for a sequel but now if there is one its gonna suck. :(

Again MTV trying to show that they are still relevant in music when they are everything but that.
