video.google.com — Remember back when they actually showed MUSIC videos? Back before they had all night marathons of The Real World? Or shows like Pimp My Ride? Of course I could be mistaken about the station now considering I haven't bothered with having cable since about 2000 or so. This is the first part of an old VHS recording of MTV way back in 1983.

Since I was 10 when this footage was shot I must admit a few things:1. Yes, the pacing is very slow. Also, Mark Goodman wasn't all that great of a VJ (no shots of naughty Nina Blackwood anywhere? Tsk tsk).2. I know it's a late '83 video but...not many commercials. Towards the end there was a 1 minute MTV advertisement with just random footage and the MTV logo--not enough commercials to fill the time it seems. Still in their "new period" when most of the American music was just concert footage and all of the "interesting" videos where coming from the U.K. 3. People will have you believe that Michael Jackson broke the "color barrier" on MTV with "Billie Jean". And yet here was Lionel Ritchie AND Prince being prominently shown/discussed while "Billie Jean" was still pretty new (it hadn't beaten Quiet Riot on the Friday Night Video Fight yet--I have now doubts that Billie Jean won the next Friday night). Interesting.

I can see the gripe about the use of the word "fag", but to defend Discovery and History Channel... come on... These networks SUCK now.

OK so I'm a huge VH1Classic junkie, which is like the best music video channel out there. What's cool about this MTV1983 clip is that there's also the VJ stuff and the commercials, so it's really a good feel of what was going on at the time. I personally have tons of tapes like this, but they don't back to this time. i have a very prized collection of taped MTV2 from 1996-7, which i would argue was one of the best times for music television (not the years in general, but MTV2 at that time).

yeah, you're right, I just grew up in the era of the early MTV days, it's a generational thing. Not all this crap they have on MTV now. The 70s rock music, some 80s and early 90s rock music is what I prefer. Alittle variety on MTV and going back to plain old music videos would be refreshing. But hey who needs MTV for music.

VH!Classic is starting to turn to crap now, too...it's showing TV shows & movies that are also being run on AMC, TBS, etc....when will these snot-nosed suit-wearing retards going to get it through their thick skulls that people who regularly view a channel like that want it to just play VIDEOS?!?!?!?Nobody who watches VH!Classic wants to see the damn HIP-HOP AWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
