You don't seem to really understand the problem. The whole reason people want one file format spec is so no one has to dictate a single OS, desktop, office package, or programming language. All of that resides on the computer and doesn't need to be transferred from one computer to another on a daily basis. Documents DO need to be transferred regularly, so a standard format is beneficial for everyone. All we want is the freedom to have our computer, OS, software reflect our needs, wants, and budget while being able to interact freely with others.Ask yourself what would happen if MS decided to charge $10,000 to upgrade to Office 2008. Most business in the world would be either held for ransom, or face a crisis of being force to keep their current systems forever. Believe it or not, the open source community this issue is being pushed by aren't the programmers behind Open Office. The issue is being pushed by customers of MS, including very powerful corporations and governments, that don't want to be at the mercy of a single supplier.
