bbspot.com — The MPAA is lobbying congress to push through a new bill that would make unauthorized home theaters illegal. The group feels that all theaters should be sanctioned, whether they be commercial settings or at home.

Wow I'm glad that that is fake because if it was real I would be really pissed. Wouldn't that be some kind of invasion of privacy also....

There are tons of good reasons to donate to the EFF. However, this is not one of them. Just like the bomb scare/hoax on a football stadium earlier this year was not a good reason to further limit our civil liberties with more patriot act like laws.

I've heard plenty of pickup on this one today from earnest folks who didn't get the joke. As someone said above - it's just believable enough!

My first thought when reading the article was that I did not know this website so checking for authenticity was needed. My second thought (after finding it is a spoof new site) was that this is a bit like their lawsuit against Kaleidescape. I believe that lawsuit was brought by the DVD-CCA. Kaleidescape is a high end video "jukebox" that loads your DVD collection onto a video server. It is a high priced system that was a favorite among people in the media world. Before bringing the system to market they had negotiated contracts with media companies and went through considerable technical contortions to "protect" digital content. But one day they found themselves being sued for copyright infringement even though they had clearly gone to great lengths to handle the legal issues in advance. The lawsuit seems to have dropped out of the news so I don't know how it resolved but the company is still in business. Maybe they were able to enforce the contracts they had already in place before the lawsuit was started.Yes, this time was a spoof but it is too close to existing reality to be comfortably dismissed as a spoof. Don't forget that the RIAA still claims that you are violating the law when you rip your CD's to your hard drive. Their claim is that they are simply allowing the practice as a courtesy but, of course, that can change in the future.

If it's real:This is the dumbest s**t I've ever heard of. Why do they insist on trying to make consumers lives difficult? No wonder people "HATE!" the MPAA and RIAA. For coming up with the dumbest s**t ever, in order to make the most money possible. If it's not:GOOD!
