kottke.org— Why are the top five most requested netflix movies also on the list of movies that people either love or hate? What makes these movies so contentious?

WHOA lets back up...I would suggest that these titles were *presented* to Netflix users for rating more than other titles...which would indicate the bias being originated from the legacy Netflix reccomendation code...
hey man, don't knock it, it's a good date movie. ain't nothing wrong with a chick flick that isn't all weepy and talking about periods or like an old friend helping another through her journey with breast cancer or some romance with some english bastard totally raising the bar on what's expected from your lazy ass. another good film in that category? Romy & Michelle's high school reunion. My Best Friend's Wedding is also mostly tolerable. Oh oh, and "Like Water For Chocolate" That one is definately the best thanks to the tasteful lesbian scenes. giggity giggity
From personal observation, I'd have to throw Groundhog Day on the list. There are people out there like me who think it's an all-time great, but how many times have I heard someone say that's nauseating because "it's just the same thing over and over again."

Yes, Napoleon Dynamite was one of my most hated movies. I wish I could have those 2 hours of my life back.
