I really wished these games would stop coping the EQ system. It would be nice to have a lot more robust UO style game like it was back in the day. Have a hard to gain skill based system with no levels and you can mold your character however you want with a very dynamic world. Sure it was a challenging game back in the day but that was what made the game thrilling. I don't really remember the last time I got a rush in a game like I had while playing in UO. It actually meant something if you died with something worthwhile on you=) You learned to be a tight community to support one another or else die from the PK's heh.
@calipsolMaybe you haven't heard that Lord of the Rings is one of the more popular literary works of the 20th century? They have the rights to the books, not the movie. And SOE != Turbine.
Been playing this since the stress test a couple of weeks back and I'm enjoying it so far. There were problems at the time with logging in and connecting to European server but those seem to have gone and it's looking good now. The graphics are stunning (especially in the Shire), the gameplay is getting better and I'm having lots of fun. I'd recommend it if you fancy a break from WOW.
You must have been one of the folks that got such a rush out of waiting around newbie spawns and killing the newly arrived (over and over and over and over and over and...you get the idea). The mandatory PK that allowed this griefing to take place is what (along with all the hacking) ruined UO.Give us an open-ended, (mostly) class independent, no forced PK (at least at low levels) MMO and you can have a hit. But, instant perma-bans by CC any hackers will be absolutely essential, or it will simply degrade into the useless/uninteresting mess that so many others have.
I had the opportunity to stress test this past weekend. The game is very good and does alot of things better then WoW. I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised how well this game played and looked at this point of development. Even better then many prior MMOs at their post-beta stage. As far as I could tell, I was happy to see that the game did a good job remaining true to Tolkien's writing and Middle Earth lore. This should help satisfy LOTR purists that traditionally don't game but may now give it a try. However, I'm also concerned with all the wacky leet speak and stupid guild names that will surely follow and rip me out of middle earth immersion. Hopefully we will have either a dedicated RP server or in-game tools that will allow us to squelch/ignore the "Powned JooZ Fellowship".The non-WoW MMO haters will surely bury/bad mouth but one should really try the game before condemning it.
Just ot clarify, there will be PvP. It's called "Monster Play". The game will be launching with four main monster races that you can play once you reach lvl 10. The spider, the warg, the orc, and the Uruk-hai. This will allow PvE play while maintaining Middle Earth lore. Hobbits killing hobbits, while fun to some, just doesn't go over well with Tolkien purists. I'm sure we will see this get expanded to other creatures as well, but don't expect to play as wraiths, as there were only 9.
The hype died down and so did the playerbase. I Recommend a free mmorpg over the pay to play ones these days, unless you're playing WoW. Thats the only good pay to play game. http://mmohut.com for a list of em'
The entire game should be free at this point.... The hype died down for it. let it join the ranks of Shadowbane, if it doesn't now, it will soon anyway. http://mmohut.com for a list of free games
Meh Lotro is okay but there are a lot of better games. Including some free ones like Atlantica and Runes of Magic. I read about em on http://mmohut.com

Site down as soon as I click to join the forums. Why do I get the feeling I won't be able to sign up to the beta?

Ok it is not exact that the lack of support for Mac and Linux will necessarily affect the success of the game. But most of the companies offering new services on the Internet and groundbreaking games have been supporting these platforms, particularly Mac. I tend to agree with dgh1973. I am with you, even if my Mac has Windows installed, I want to play on Mac OS X. Big difference. They are digging ;) their own grave.
