I think my old company would have looked at this, determined a stupid little green badge on a story a friend of mine Dugg added so precious little value that it wasn't worth any developer time to implement in the first place, let alone shifting data storage models to accomodate. Of course, my old company was also profitable and didn't have piles of venture capital to burn.

How exactly is this "the worst solution?" Digg doesn't care about write efficiency. They receive far more reads than writes. This solution create rapid reads while sacrificing write time and immediate data availability. The pro's outweigh the con's for them.

I really enjoyed the reddit thread. It reminded me of slash dot. Part of the controversy over there is, the digg problem is not clearly defined, that is, all the business and technical parameters. The article is only a less-technical summary. What we know for sure is they are having performance problems and they solved it by moving to a non-relational database.I agree with Barackalpse that the little green shields have to be justified from a business point of view. I don't use them. Perhaps Digg has a good reason for them?

Here is another solution to the slow queries in MySQL, improve the IN clause and replace it with an EXISTS clause. Of course, I am assuming indexes (indices) exist for the columns in the ORDER BY and friend_id is indexed in Friends table. The point of the article is not whether the feature is crucial or beneficial to Digg. They wanted to do it for whatever reason, maybe Kevin had a funky dream one night. The truth is it doesn't matter.As someone looking into Cassandra and sick of the sharding/performance limitations of MySQL I really appreciate any info I can glean from people tackling complex problems. For instance, I don't care if Facebook decided they want to index every letter of every post for every user. I just care to see how they would tackle such a task and what tools they would use. In the end, some of those techniques/tools will be helpful to me as well.
