nytimes.com — LOGGING on to Gmail or other e-mail service has become a routine of daily life, completed without a thought. What would you do, however, if you woke up tomorrow, plugged in your user name and password as you always do, but then received an unfamiliar message: ?User name and password do not match??

"Wrong. The revenue from your "attention" only pays for the hosting cost."How do you know this? Your contention is that gmail is basically a charity email service because Google turns no profit from it (they just break even). What's your source? Why are you accepting mediocrity just because something is free? Linux is free. Yet there are support forums and in many cases you can actually solve the problem you might be having with it more efficiently than you could solve if you were paying Microsoft for customer support. And if there are major problems with the OS, they're usually eventually fixed. I want my email to be free and have good customer support. It's not that radical a concept.

I'm amazed that 99% of the people here have missed the point - if people can't trust Google for anything more than 'free / trash / play' accounts, that's all they'll do. Also, the 'just follow the prompts' replies totally miss the point - if the system malfunctions (which is does) then these prompts won't work. An then you're screwed. Big picture is that Google has real interest in getting people comfortable with the Cloud. By failing to support gmail at all, they're saying "Don't trust (our) Cloud for anything that actually maters". Which is exactly why they're having a hard time making money with anything but AdSenseAlso, their paid option is crap. I know, because I tried it.
