tux.ius.edu — Type in any message and see it displayed live via webcam on a HP printer display. This is much more amusing than it sounds. The more this is dugg, the funnier the content will be.The code allowing text to be displayed is linked from the website.

Am I the only one who immediately thought of the monitor-glued-to-the-wall thing from back in the day (err... 2005)?

I downloaded the GUI of the original hack <a class="user" href="http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/jetdirecthack">http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/jetdirecthack</a> to try it on my HP LaserJet and it works great ... now to find one for Lexmark printers (because any place that I can think of to use this has Lexmark printers).

Yeah. This is not a hack. The ready message change is a feature of PJL (printer job language). I was doing this on the 5si in the computer lab back in college. Really messes people up.

What does Irongeek start off the video saying. Sounds like come-de-da-de-ca.<a class="user" href="http://tux.ius.edu/diggeffect.avi">http://tux.ius.edu/diggeffect.avi</a>

Irongeek, one thing I did when I was running a webcam, was I used some software that would take a picture on what ever interval you set it at (I ran mine at 3 seconds), and it would then save the photo locally or ftp it. How I had mine was, I had one box with the webcam, which would take the picture, save it via Samba to my linux server, and I had a symlink on the server that would point directly to where the photo was saved to. If you had the webcam take a snapshot every time it was requested, no wonder you had issues. There is software that will do this for both Linux (which is what I run), and windows. I've tried opensource software that will do it on both OS's, and its really not that hard to do. Check around sourceforge.

Is it really down for good?
