You probably know what you're doing, but I'd recommend kernel 2.6.28+ (currently only at rc7 :-/ ). It isn't required but it makes life a bit easier. (provides audio and wifi drivers). Oh and the screen is absolutely beautiful on mine too. :)

Most Asus Eee do have better batteries. Go read a review. My AAO lasts like 2-2.5 hours. Some Asus Eee get 4-6 hours. When people make these stupid comparisons of an AAO being $250 cheaper than an Asus Eee, they're comparing an AAO with the lowest spec- including a 3-cell battery.

"Disposable Price"...at $200-$300. - Wow man, some of us in this economy are lucky if we get just barely enough to scrape by bills and most of the time still don't. Throw some of that "Disposable $200-$300" my way.If they somehow invented a netbook that sold for under $100 now THAT might be disposable, but wow -- $300 could last me 3-4 months worth of bills and I'm finding even that hard to scrape together.

For comparison: I bought an acer laptop with a dual core Athlon (1.8ghz) a few months ago for $500 at Best Buy. Granted...I only have a Geforce 7000m in the thing, but I didn't buy it for gaming, or even Blu-Ray playback, so why would I need such high graphics for a computer with an even smaller screen? If I need a super small/mobile computer that can handle the net I'll just buy an Iphone...
