linux.oneandoneis2.org — This article explains some of the reasons why Linux's job is not to become increasingly Windows-like, nor is it Open Source's duty to merely provide free duplicates of every Windows-user's favorite program. --Many people here on digg need to give this a read.

Nice article but this was on the digg frontpage a month or so ago. Probably been numerous times before. Old.

Scabby: Sir, there?s Klingon?s off the starboard bow.Captain Burke (whilst the illiterate consults the Wikipedia): There not Klingons, Scabby, they?re the distro police.Scabby: Hooow, dooo, you nooooo, lad?Captain Burke: Can?t you see that bucket?s name, it?s the USS Superfluous.Scabby: We?re hit, Cap?n. The hull?s breached at the quarterdeck ?n I doooon have any engineers to fix it. They?re all working in the kitchen and we?re still rebuilding after the last hyperbolic meltdown.Captain Burke: Can?t you get the people in marketing to fix it. Didn?t they survive?Scabby: We?ll have to abandon ship Cap?n as the console is directly connected to the simulators in the kindergarten.Captain Burke: Look, over there, we?re saved from any criticism. It?s the HMS Disastrous. Lets get on board, they tell me it?s not that much of a lemon.Scabby: I think were thinking of the SAS U?Rant-o.Captain Burke: what?s that stupid red hat all about. ?R you some kinda communist? And lose the body suit.Scabby: They?re boarding Cap?n and I thought I?d blend in and avoid the flaming.(some time later)Captain Burke: What do you reckon, Scabby? It?s the wrong colour and I have to stand on a chair to reach the ignition. But technically it is still a space-schlock.Scabby: There is good and bad news. The bad news is that the steering wheel is connected to the propeller shaft and there are no paddles.Captain Burke: What?s the good news?Scabby: The toilets flush automatically.Captain Burke: Buffy will save us!

@lasmithYour just a whine job. Get over it. Slackware was great for exactly the reasons this article points out. It puts you in control, almost total control. If you couldn't handle it, then you should have tried redhat.@teitokuYou must be confusing Linux with the many X-Windows based GUI's that happen to run on it.Linux is nothing like windows. KDE on the other hand... Well, virtual folders are a revolutionary new feature in Vista, not so new to KDE...@drbhoneydewI know exactly what you mean about the Docs on DOS, they were pretty decent, but what I remember most was qbasic's integrated help. I was only 9 or so when I got my 286, but the online docs were great. Way better then the manual that came with my TI-99/4A.... OTOH, Linux Docs aren't really that bad... The only thing that sucks is info pages... GNU should just go back to having good man pages. The quality of the docs is the important part and the presentation is secondary. Having the Docs fractured between man pages, info pages, and /usr/share/docs (or whatever) is annoying, but at least it's there...@sintaxFinally, someone else who sees through the fog of crap. Unix is badass, not that I would go back to the 80's to relive Unix's youth, but the 70's might have been cool... Ever run Unix V7 on a pdp11 emulator? It's a blast from the past...Despite my responses to what other had to say, I have to say that the article started off bad, but by the end I had changed my mind. It's a decent piece to keep bookmarked for the next time the topic comes up.

Linux comes in different flavours. For an expert in love with the console to beginner which just formatted a NTFS drive and installed a linux distro. Each category of users has a different expectation from the software they find on their installed distros. "Linux users" is not an exclusive club in which you can be proud member. Take your head out of your ass.

@5blocksfree"I'm still trying to figure out the logic behind this little gem: "Let's make the scroll box in the scroll bar diminish in height..."I, personally, LOVE the proportional scrollblock. It allows me to see the size of the document at a glance. Also, (until the minimum size for the block is reached), it means that the length of page I'm scrolling corresponds directly with how much I move the block. That is, with a static scrollblock, the distance I have to scroll to get to the bottom of the document is approximately equal to the viewport size, no matter if the document is only 50px larger than the viewport or 500px larger. With a proportional block, the amount you scroll increases as the document increases.Anyway, I really notice it when I move to a system that has a static scrollblock and it drives me crazy. I won't even start on the other scroll bar related issues that drive me nuts.
