mdeslaur.blogspot.com — For the longest time, I could use gtkpod to seamlessly access my iPods from my Ubuntu desktop. It initially took some reverse-engineering effort to understand the iPod's data format to be able to access it from non-iTunes software, but it was possible. All of a sudden, Apple is trying everything they can to prohibit interoperability.

The labels have given up on DRM just like the RIAA has given up on suing individual file-sharers.

So the replacement for his 5G iPod won't be from Apple? Assuming the replacement won't be a Zune (which is less well supported on Linux than the iPod is), what music is he going to delete to make up for the 48GB (give or take formatting margins) deficiency in capacity between an iPod 5G (80GB) and the non-Apple players currently available, which max out at 32GB?

I think most of us would be quite content with just a syncing application - we don't need the iTunes store, or Genius, or any of that stuff. Just a way to get our media from the PC to the iPod would be fantastic.

iTunes barely even works for windows. A linux port would devour your RAM and CPU.

"I am sure it irritates the hell out of them to be forced to support Windows"Yeah, it'd irritate the hell out of me if I were forced to support the platform that makes up 90% (or more) of my user base......Seriously, I've got a mac/ipod/iphone and even I thought that was the dumbest comment ever. Be pragmatic..... there's an ENORMOUS amount of ipod users on a windows install base.

So, is anyone forcing Pre users to upgrade their version of iTunes?

Just about every server in existence runs Linux. Your words smell of ignorance and stupidity. Have fun being owned by apple or microsoft, I'll be happy on my configurable linux box.

apple has also started using more cheaper materials to mass produce MORE Ipods, choosing quantity over quality.
