tuxradar.com — Building software from source - that's a bit old-school, isn't it? Who wants to wrestle with the command line, hunting down dependencies and coaxing the GCC compiler into running properly? Well, it does sound like a strange thing to do in this world of binary packages and online repositories.

You've never quashed a dependency with a new version? Yes, f**king with gtklib can render your desktop environment useless.

Nice article. Compiling by reading individual documentations for software was a little daunting.

Why can't people like read the comments of the other ignorant trolls before posting stupid comments like these? It really does get annoying seeing the same uninformed ramblings over and over again...

Am I the only one who think that compiling programs from source is fun? Well, I guess that's just me...

That's all fine, but I thought we were discussing the OPs point of being able to compile OSS on windows and why Linux is supposedly superior in that scenario? The only OSS that's been a _real_ pain to compile on XP I've come across has been the older GPL Qt libs to make them work with MSVC (MSVC is officially supported only with the commercial license). That pain has past though, since it makes more sense to use QtCreator for Qt apps.> just keep an open mind to Linux because you might one day see that it's really exciting and cool.I don't have religious onions of any software and therefore am open to just about any modern-ish OS. When I move on from XP however, it'll most likely be to Ubuntu or Kubuntu, and not Vista. MSVCs debugger (container visualisers, etc.) will be sorely missed, though.

This article highlights exactly what is keeping Linux from going mainstream, but completely misses this point. For linux to make it big time, my grandmother has to be able to use it without help. It must be user friendly and very straight forward. I need too look up how to get Win32 codecs running so i can play a f**king movie every time i venture back into linux, and thats just for starters, and I am by no means a novice. Driver installs for my video card should be as simple as me going to ATI, or Nvidias website and downloading thier latest package, double click, and it does its self... I could go on but i think you get the drift.
