forums.whirlpool.net.au — We need to digg ATI some bad press. Unlike NVIDIA, they refuse to provide driver support for Linux. They can't continue to get away with this: Many Windows users are starting to want Linux compatible hardware, because they have "the switch" in mind.

its true that they have the drivers, point is that those drivers are barely able to harness the power of the ATI hardwareme is a graphics developer, with such drivers, on a x1800 i get performance of the levelof an old intel graphics chip-set in linux.

Seriously. How does this even make the list? Who cares? Linux has what? 5% of the desktop market? Quit bitching till you hit double digits.

Actually I just got a laptop with ATI chipset and have Ubuntu installed on it. According to the OFFICIAL source (ATI) 3D acceleration (via OpenGL) is NOT supported. Proven by the fact I get errors when I try to use OpenGL on ATI's own drivers so I had to disable all OpenGL related functionality. Does that sound like supporting linux to you? Open GL acceleration is supported on Windows. Funny how someone can call this supporting Linux...

Even though I remember a recent article on how they are going to open the drivers (I'm pretty sure it was from a recent RedHat conference) - I have to agree. It's really anoying at how lacking the ATi drivers are right now. Hopefully that changes soon (I'm in the process of switching to Ubuntu - currently setting up my laptop - which happens to have the ATi 200M video card and a broadcom network card - fun!)

Dude, I got my ATI x1600 card to work fine! Installing the drivers were not even that hard. What the hell is this guy bitching about? Some people just need to learn how to use linux.

> The linux market is mega small. The windows market is huge. The Mac market isn't significantly larger than the Linux market, and they don't seem to have any trouble supporting Mac OS X. Hell, we don't even need them to develop drivers - we just need them to release the programming documentation for their hardware so that existing volunteers can write functional drivers.
